Following your intuition is an important way to value and honor your higher self. Our intuition helps us understand things instantly and without much thought. We often encounter our intuition giving us warnings, but we often ignore its subtle signs.

There may have been times in your life when you regretted that you hadn’t followed your gut. Can you think of any? Keep reading if you want to stop experiencing the nagging regret over ignoring your intuition. This article will help you follow your intuition more and stop running from your gut feelings!

Intuition v.s. Ego

First, you need to learn the difference between intuition and the egoic mind.

My mentor taught me that a special energy surrounds our intuition, differentiating it from the egoic mind. I’ve learned that intuition is surrounded by peace. This peace is evident even if I am being led to do challenging things like quitting a job or letting go of a friend.

On the other hand, fear follows the egoic mind. It makes us wonder things like “What will they think of me?” and there is usually a sense of urgency around it – this is NOT similar to the peacefulness intuition brings.

More on The Egoic Mind:

The Ego is the innermost version of you trying to keep everything the same, safe, and unchanged. It comes up with elaborate stories and tries to convince you not to make adjustments in your life, even if needed to grow and thrive. As Byron Katie once said, “The Ego’s job is to kill everything but itself.”

We need to push past the fear our egoic mind puts on us. Maxime Lagacé reminds you to, “Destroy your illusions so you can see reality. Destroy your fears so you can take risks. Destroy your Ego so you can see life.” When we live in fear, it prevents us from experiencing all the beauty life has to offer. You deserve to tap into the beauty and serenity of the world!

It Can be Hard to Listen to Our Intuition

Many people numb themselves to avoid listening to their intuition. When we use drugs, alcohol, and food, it puts us in a state of chaos where we are basically running from that still inner voice.

There is a reason why we are running from our intuition. Our intuition usually guides us to make changes and take risks/leaps. Simply put, many people are fearful of change. It can feel very distressing to leave relationships or let go of our vices. Even though these changes are intimidating, I encourage you to face them. Whether you realize it or not, you have so much strength living inside of you.

Remember that you, just as much as anyone else, deserve to improve your life. Trust that your intuition will guide you to the good things destined for you. It will also attempt to keep you safe and protect you. This is evident in the story I share below.

My Story

I have a story that I hope inspires you to follow your intuition.

Many years ago, I was driving and heading to San Diego with a car full of friends. After some time, I felt this nudge to get off the freeway. I ended up ignoring it because I was caravanning with vehicles in front and behind me.

I went to turn the radio up to make the music louder, and within seconds, the whole freeway was stopped. However, I didn’t see the stopped cars in front of me because I was looking down at the radio. I ended up needing to swerve left and right to avoid hitting all the cars. Even though my car was damaged and needed to be towed off the freeway, we avoided a massive car accident with other vehicles.

I thought back to that little nudge I had before. I didn’t listen to that guidance inside me, and I am pretty convinced it was trying to warn me. It made me realize that our intuition is trying to communicate important messages to us all the time, and we should try to listen more!

Here are My Tips on How to Listen to Our Intuition:

Shut Out the Outside World:

Why? You may ask. Everyone has an opinion and an agenda of how you should live your life. People will try to guide you in directions they think are best without honoring your best interests at heart.

This is why listening to your inner voice is essential – it knows what’s best for you! You can start doing this by building trust within yourself.

Also, ask yourself these prompts and try journaling with them:

  • Who are you when no one is looking?
  • What do you want and need from life?
  • What is life telling you? Are you listening?

Meditate and Listen:

The world gets too noisy sometimes, and we get distracted by the warnings our inner voice and gut share with us. Take time to be by yourself and embrace the quietness. You can meditate and connect with your inner peace. In this time of calmness, listen to your inner voice and explore your thoughts and desires for your life.

SLOW the F Down:

Pardon my language, but seriously we are all rushing from class to appointment to work. It feels like we all are hamsters running on a wheel without stopping! It is hard to slow down and listen to ourselves through all the chaos. It is also challenging to learn the difference between being guided by our intuition or the fear of the egoic mind.

My advice is to try and have a work-life balance in your life. Allow yourself time to relax and slow down. Allow yourself to rest – remind yourself that taking breaks does not make you a bad student or worker at all! When doing so, this stillness will allow us to tap into your inner voice and needs.

Spend Time in Nature:

Aka, put the phone down, stop scrolling, and experience life by touching the bark of a tree, wiggling your toes in the sand, etc. Basically, I’m saying to experience life outside this technologically obsessed world. While in nature, you can even meditate or journal, as mentioned before!

Overall…

I hope this post helped you learn more about our inner voice and the egoic mind. I also hope my own story inspires you to use my tips for trusting your intuition. Wishing you all the best as you follow your intuition throughout your journey of life.
